Buying a Sandbox – What to Consider

A sandbox in your own garden is one of the most popular play areas for children. To ensure that digging, splashing, and building are not only fun but also safe and long-lasting, it’s worth taking a closer look at size, features, materials, and accessories. The brand Meppi offers well-designed models for different needs – from compact versions to playhouses with mud trays and roofs.

Size & Space Requirements

  • For 1–2 children: approx. 120 × 120 cm is sufficient

  • For multiple children or more accessories: from 150 × 150 cm

  • Important: measure the location before purchase – including roof height and freedom of movement

Typical Meppi Models:

  • Meppi Sandbox Laboe – compact and ideal for small gardens

  • Sandbox House Fehmarn – spacious, with side walls and integrated roof

With or Without a Roof?

  • With roof: protects against sun, leaves, and light rain

  • Without roof: more affordable, requires additional sun protection (e.g. umbrella)

Suitable Meppi Models:

  • Sandbox Travemünde with child

  • Travemünde – with chalkboard and sales counter

  • Usedom – boat-shaped sandbox with sunshade

Mud Trays & Extras

  • Mud trays encourage sensory play and are easy to clean

  • Additional extras: benches, storage space, sales counter

  • Especially practical for models like the Meppi Sandbank for balcony and terrace

Price Range (approx.)

Features Price Range
Compact models from approx. €130
Models with roof from approx. €250–300

Age Recommendations

  • From 12 months: with seating support and supervision

  • 2–6 years: ideal for creative play

  • From 6 years: larger models with playhouse or extra features

What Sand Is Suitable?

  • Certified play sand: washed, low-dust, germ-free

  • Rounded grains, TÜV-certified or compliant with DIN EN 71-3

  • Do not use construction sand or untested quartz sand

  • Meppi recommends approx. 200 kg of play sand depending on the model

Covering – Useful or Not?

Highly recommended to protect against rain, leaves, and animals

Options:

  • Tarpaulin (water-repellent)

  • Mesh cover (breathable)

  • Sandbox fleece – protection from below

    • Prevents weeds and ground moisture

    • Promotes clean sand through proper drainage

    • Strongly recommended for wooden sandboxes without a fixed base

Dealing with Moisture

  • Fleece or a drainage gravel bed ensures water runoff

  • Do not use plastic sheeting underneath – leads to waterlogging and mold

  • Loosen and replace sand regularly if heavily soiled
